Over the years I have watched my family members can tons of food. I never really gave it a lot of thought until I realized how cost effective it would be to have garden fresh produce all year long. My mother-in-law always has green beans and tomatoes. I knew I needed to learn as much as I could. So I have been reading all I could and I have even started collecting my own canning supplies.
Since canning is something that can help food last for long periods of time, I thought it would be a good idea to showcase the many items you could use. I have learned that prepping and canning go hand in hand. Here are some of the canning supplies that I have used and enjoyed.
My mother-in-law has this exact canner and I love it. It works very well. The thing I love the most about this is that it handles easily. While I like having larger canners, they are often very cumbersome and bulky. This canner is easy to clean, lightweight and it is easy to handle. I would have to say this is a real winner. This is a steam canner so it works a little differently than the pressurized canners. It doesn’t take long to get the hang of it and best of all, it’s budget friendly!
Now this is the big boy. This unit has all the ability you could ever want. This unit can be used to pressure cook food or it can be used to pressure can. I prefer to use this item when canning. I actually have this canner and it has worked very well. It is not as lightweight as the previous example but it works very well. The price is a little high but this is to be expected when you buy a pressure canner. They are expensive. But they will last your whole life. My grandmother still has hers and it is well over 50 years old.
This is another item that we have as a backup for canning. Now I must admit that I do not use it all the time but that is not because I do not like it. The main reason I bought this item is because it does not require electricity to work. In a real emergency scenario, electricity will be hard to come by and that makes this tool very useful. It chops and processes food very well, making it easy to process your vegetables to create sauces to fill all your empty cans. The price is also very reasonable.
One of the most overlooked aspects of canning is the labeling part. Your food might be awesome and the canning process might be flawless. But if you are not able to date your food or differentiate what is what…well then you might as well forget it. These labels are easy to use and they are super easy to remove. They will not leave sticky residue behind so you can quickly clean your jars and reuse them without any hassle. I keep these in my kitchen at all times!
Most jars are the same. I like these jars because they are priced well and they are wide mouthed. I have probably used well over 100 of these jars. The lids are solid and the rings hold up well over time. The wider mouths make them easier to fill and they are just my favorite canning jars overall.
Every canner needs to have the right tools for the job. You cannot pick the jars up without a good jar claw and you always are going to find a use for the funnel. Plain and simple, canning requires a set of very specific tools and skills. These tools are cheap and they are durable. Plus, you can get them in any color you might like.
Are you new to canning? Are you sure about the right temperature and time to process different foods? This book is the ultimate guide to canning and I have referred to it countless times as I learned how to can properly. It has all the info about cook time, temperature, proper cleaning, boiling, and even storage. You need this book. Do not can without reading this book!
