How to Prep For a Terrorist Attack

It’s been just a little more than 13 years since the country watched in horror as planes crashed into the World Trade Center. Those September 11 terrorist attacks left a lasting impression on the world and the events following that day inspired many Americans to take on the prepper lifestyle. On that devastating day, we learned that terrorist attacks can and do happen on American soil and we must be prepared. But is there really a way to be prepared for some unknown terrorist attack in the future? How do you prep for an event that you never see coming? Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure you are ready to protect those you love if another tragedy like September 11th occurs in the future.

Make an Emergency Plan

The first thing every family should do is make an emergency plan so that every person in your home knows what to do and where to go if there is a terrorist attack. While we hope and pray that we are all together when these kinds of horrors occur, there are no guarantees. You need to set up a plan to determine where you will all gather so everyone can head to a central location. If you have children that attend school or daycare, determine who will be responsible for picking them up. Remember that if the power grid goes down, you won’t have a way to communicate with your spouse and kids. That’s why everyone needs to understand the family emergency plan ahead of time so you can quickly find each other and stay together.

Avoid Crowded Areas

Terrorist attacks tend to happen in crowded public places and high profile areas. When you notice there is an elevated threat level or growing international instability, it’s time to button down the hatches and avoid those crowded places. That means staying away from international airports, large commercial buildings, or other places where thousands of people gather at one time.

Stay Vigilant

The key to surviving any act of terrorism is staying vigilant. This means that you watch the news, read the headlines, and keep an eye on what is happening around the world. If you tend to be skeptical about the main stream media, regularly follow alternative news sources so that you feel confident that you have some idea of the truth. You should also stay vigilant about your immediate surroundings when you are out in public. If you notice something suspicious or just get a bad feeling that something isn’t quite right, remove yourself and your loved ones from the situation immediately. Always, always, always trust your gut!

Keep A Bug Out Bag With You

Make it a habit to always have a bug out bag with you. Just stash a packed bag in the trunk of your car so you always have supplies on hand just in case you need them. Not only would this be life saving in the event of a terror attack, but it is also handy for routine emergencies like a broken down car.

Make Prepping a Priority

It’s easy to put off emergency preparedness. We assume we have plenty of time, but keep in mind that terrorist attacks are usually completely unexpected. That’s why you have to prepare now before things get crazy. You need a good stockpile of food, water, and first aid essentials so that you are never caught off guard by an emergency. If you don’t have the extra money to prep, just do it a little at a time. Skip those trips to Starbucks or give up sodas. Take that extra ten bucks each week and put it towards your preps. You can buy a lot of rice and beans and bottled water just by allotting an extra ten dollars per week!

Be Prepared to Defend Your Home

Self defense is not something you want to address in the middle of a national emergency. You need to arm yourself now so that you are prepared if disaster strikes. Make sure you have a good supply of ammunition for your firearms and routinely check your weapons to insure that they are clean and in good working order.

Personal preparedness doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Like anything else in life, you just do a little at a time and keep working at it. Even the smallest steps to prepare will pay off in big ways if there is another major terrorist attack on American soil.
