When the topic of the SHTF comes up many people are not willing or interested in divulging much about their plans. While I understand secrecy for security’s sake, the real kicker here is that most people do not have a plan. I have been amazed at the number of people that have taken the time to stockpile food and water and yet they have no viable plans in place for when the grid fails or when society crumbles. While it’s not something we like to think about, the idea of society falling apart is not new. It has happened before and it will happen again. The key is to be prepared and to be trained, and to be ready for whatever might happen.
In the event that you are trying to put together a plan of action for the “end of days” then you are in the right place. These are 7 key things that you need to do right away after the SHTF.
- Meet Up With Your Team
If you are scratching your head or laughing this idea off, you are crazy. I am not suggesting that you form a band of preppers that are all in your neighborhood. I understand that most would like to be anonymous when it comes to prepping. What I am suggesting is that you have a close friend or better yet a few family members that you can prep with. The honest truth is that you are going to be able to survive for a while by yourself. However it is always better to have a group, no matter how small.
Once you are able to gather up with your team you will be able to do more work in less time. You will be able to combine resources and your chances of survival are going to skyrocket.
- Get To Your Bug Out Spot
This might seem odd to some people but I would not always suggest that you travel a great distance to bug out. Many times it will be better to stay in your own area. Many will refer to this as bugging in. Whatever the case may be in your particular scenario, it is important that you get to wherever you are planning on going right away. Do not waste time arguing over direction and routes etc. Have all of this planned out in advance.
In a situation where you are being forced from your home, then you are going to need to have a place where you can go. Do not wait until the last minute and do not think this scenario is too far fetched to happen to you. Always make sure that you have planned for any and all possibilities.
- Secure Your Location
This might sound like a line straight out of an action movie but it is true nonetheless. When you end up where you are going there is a strong likelihood that you have either been followed or that you are not the only one looking for this location. This is the time you need to take action. Do whatever you have to do to secure your perimeter and your area. It is a good time to set up trip wires and other forms of traps that can alert you to a possible intrusion. The idea is to know your area and to be able to defend under any form of attack.
- Defend Your Area
After you have arrived at your location, be it a long haul or just your everyday home, you are going to need to secure the area and then hunker down for a time and defend the area. It will not be uncommon for groups of people to try and find locations where supplies might be hidden. Expect this. Plan for this. And make sure you have the needed manpower and firepower to secure your provisions. Even the best neighbors will quickly become enemies if it’s a matter of life and death.
- Find Water
Water is the most essential aspect of your survival. If you have no water then you will not last long. Always make sure that you have taken the time to learn the area and to know where you can find sources of hydration. If there is fresh water close by then make sure you understand how to gather the water and then cleanse the water for safe consumption.
- Gather Food
This is the time when you need to hunt for food and make sure that you are able to provide for yourself and your group. It is also a great time to start planning on starting a garden of some kind. Obviously the time of year will determine what you can grow but it is always a good idea to start a garden that can provide renewable resources.
This might seem like a long shot to many people but there is always a redeeming quality about society. The biggest benefit to a society is the number of people that are pulling together and helping out. When the current culture breaks down there will be another that follows soon after. Make sure you are ready for this and take steps to positively influence the new society as it springs up around you.
