Simple Home Remedies That Every Mom Should Know

There are some medical emergencies that require a trip to the doctor’s office, but for a lot of common illnesses or injuries, treatment is available at home with the help of home remedies. These are dozens of methods that our ancestors used before modern medicine was introduced and a lot of those old practices are still valuable for modern families! As a mom, learning natural remedies can not only save you hundreds of dollars in medical bills, but it can give you confidence to care for your children in an emergency when you can’t access formal medical care. Here are some basic home remedies that moms around the world use everyday.

Upset Stomach

When a stomach virus makes the rounds at your house, reach for the ginger! People have used this spice for centuries to sooth an upset stomach and combat nausea. In fact, I remember my mother insisting that I drink Ginger Ale when I had horrible morning sickness. The next time someone in your home feels queasy, offer ginger tea, candied ginger, ginger ale, or ginger cookies. You can even purchase ginger candy to keep in your purse to fight a wave of motion sickness.

If you have ever struggled with constipation, you know how miserable this common condition can be! While there are lots of old wives tales about how to get your bowels moving, the one proven method is prunes. Scientific studies show that eating a dozen prunes a day is more effective for treating constipation than taking psyllium supplements. Before you head to the doctor for a dreaded enema, grab a box of prunes at the supermarket and eat up!

Sore Throat

Whether you are struggling with seasonal allergies or the symptoms of a common cold, sore throat can be really frustrating. The easiest way to cure a sore throat is with a simple salt water gargle. The American Journal of Preventative Medicine conducted a randomized study that found salt water gargling was effective to treat a sore throat and ease other symptoms of upper respiratory infections. Salt water rinses are also great for treating mouth ulcers.

The pain from a migraine can bring a grown man to tears. There is really no way to describe the agony of migraines, especially if they are chronic. The good news is that you can treat a migraine headache without drugs! All you need is ice. When you feel the headache start, immediately grab an ice pack and place it on the front of your neck to cover the carotid artery. Studies show that simply applying ice on the carotid artery reduced migraine pain in 77 percent of patients!

Cuts, Scrapes, and Sores

If you have a skin wound, the first thing to reach for is raw honey! Clean the area carefully and then apply honey and cover with a dressing. Repeat this process every twelve hours and you will be amazed at how quickly a nasty scrape will heal. I once had an infected cut that didn’t heal after taking a round of oral antibiotics and trying a prescription strength antibiotic ointment. Someone suggested raw honey and I decided to give it a try. The wound was infection-free within 48 hours. Even my doctor was stunned!

Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are fairly common, but they are still really unpleasant! Children can get yeast infections in the mouth, known as thrush. Nursing moms often develop yeast infections on their nipples. Ouch! However, genital yeast infections are the most common and over-the-counter creams don’t always work. You can treat a yeast infection at home with natural yogurt. By applying yogurt directly to the yeast infection twice a day, it will soothe pain and irritation and promote natural healing.

Are you struggling to get a good night’s sleep? Skip those prescription sleeping pills that leave you feeling hung-over in the morning. Instead, reach for tart cherries! About half an hour before you plan to go to bed, have a glass of tart cherry juice and you will be amazed at how well you sleep. According to Dr. Oz, cherries contain natural melatonin, which causes you to relax into a soothing slumber.

Insect Bites

If your child has itchy mosquito bites, relief is waiting in the bathroom! Go grab a bar of dry soap and rub it on the bug bite. Within seconds, the itching will stop and be gone for hours. You can reapply as needed if the itching becomes bothersome again.

olive oil

Eczema is a common problem for people of all ages, but it is particularly challenging for an infant or child. You can treat this itchy skin condition with olive oil. Grab a cotton swab and soak it in olive oil and then dab it directly onto the effected skin. Olive oil is used as a base for many store-bought creams, but you can get the same relief without all the chemical additives by using oil straight from the kitchen cabinet.

Urinary Tract Infections

baking soda

If you develop a painful urinary tract infection, reach for the baking soda. Stir a ¼ teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of water and drink it once per day. The chemical makeup of baking soda will help balance the pH levels in the bladder to fight off infection and prevent the spread of bacteria.

The next time someone in your house has a minor medical problem, try these home remedies for quick relief at home. What other home remedies do you use?
