How to Prep for Pandemics with Essential Oils

We all know that natural medicine is growing in popularity. The rising cost of medications, health insurance, and office co-pays is leaving many families struggling to provide health care for their families. It’s just getting too expensive. So, in turn, many people are beginning to use natural supplements, herbs, and essential oils to treat common ailments and illnesses. With epidemic outbreaks of SARS, H1N1 flu, and most recently, Ebola, people are looking for natural cures and preventatives for these diseases.

Did you know that there are some essential oils and oil blends that can be a strong defense in the fight against pandemic diseases? It’s true! Essential oils have been used for generations – even since Bible times – to heal and fight disease. Here are some essential oils you want in your medicine cabinet – you can use them to boost the immune system, fight viruses, common colds, and even pandemic sickness.

Lemon essential oil is a known disinfectant, and it can be used for cleaning, deodorizing, and purifying. Use some in a tea to detox the body, or diffuse some in the air to disinfect. Lemon can also be used in a tea with honey to soothe a sore throat.

Clove oil is a natural antibiotic and analgesic oil – commonly used for dental problems and toothaches. It also reduces teething pain in babies. Clove oil is also antimicrobial – which means it can kill bacteria.

Oregano essential oil is also a virus killer. You can use it topically or in a capsule to help fight colds and viruses – it has proven effective at killing bacteria and lessening illness length. It is a potent weapon in fighting sickness! You can also dilute it with a carrier oil to use on children.

Peppermint oil is wonderful for bringing down fever. It also helps with upset stomach and headache, too – so it is a great oil to have on hand to help with some of the initial onset symptoms of many illnesses.

Oil blends can be another powerful tool in fighting illness. You can apply them topically, some can be ingested, and they can be diffused into the air to help kill germs. You can diffuse single oils, or a combination of them, or an oil blend for combating sickness!

Two commercial blends are Thieves, manufactured by Young Living, and On Guard, manufactured by doTerra. These blends have several essential oils – clove, lemon, cinnamon, and other oils that are known for their germ fighting properties. You probably could also find similar blends at a health food store or online retailer.

You want to keep these type of oils in your medicine cabinet. They are not just for the occasional use for certain health concerns, but also for germ fighting. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to have sample size travel bottles diluted with coconut oil in your bug out bag, purse, or glove box for when you’ are away from home. Say there was a flu outbreak and your family was the only one not affected – you’d do everything you could to keep it that way – and essential oils might be your best defense- I would recommend stretching them by using a carrier oil if you use them topically – especially if you are in the midst of a pandemic and need them to go a long way or for multiple people. You might also try diffusing to help them go further as well. Teach your family how and when to use them, and write out instructions on how often to apply them based on the symptoms.

Have you stocked up on essential oils to combat pandemic illnesses? Which oils do you like best?
