Natural Methods to Treat Summer Allergies

For allergy sufferers, spring and summer can be miserable. Sneezing, watery, itchy eyes, and trouble breathing are all common symptoms of those plagued by seasonal allergies. It’s a time when most people love to be outdoors, yet allergies make it so unbearable they would rather just stay inside. Usually one has to resort to over the counter medications, and sometimes even prescriptions or pricey allergy shots. The good news is that there are some natural methods to help you fight summer allergies. Here are a few of the most effective.

Local Honey

Local honey has been known for years to be a powerful weapon against allergies. Honey that is produced close to where you live has many of the same allergens and pollens in it that make you sick so ingesting it in small amounts daily has been shown to reduce the allergy attacks related to local pollens. Local honey can be found at farmer’s markets, from roadside stands, in stores, or direct from the seller.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are growing in popularity to treat seasonal allergies as respiratory issues. A blend of lavender, peppermint, and lemon oils applied to the bottoms of the feet or diffused into the air can offer some respite from an allergy attack. Some oil companies also offer a respiratory blend for colds, allergies, and asthma. There are hundreds of health benefits associated with using essential oils for health and they offer a great solution for homeopathic allergy relief.

Steam Treatments

Steam baths are another great way to treat an allergy or respiratory issue. Sitting in a steamy shower or bath and deeply inhaling the steam will bring relief to those sore nasal passages, but will also help you to breath easier. You can also add one or more of the essential oils discussed above to the bath for an added punch to relieve congestion. You could also try a saline solution or Neti-pot to help relieve congestion symptoms.

Eliminate Allergens

Do a little deep cleaning. Spring cleaning can remove layers of dust and allergens that have been laying dormant all winter. Change and wash your sheets frequently (usually weekly on the hottest setting), vacuum your furniture and mattresses, and dust often to get rid of any dust mites or debris that could be causing your allergies to flare up. If your vacuum doesn’t have a HEPA filter, consider adding one to help cut down on the allergens it can leave behind.

Know Your Triggers

Sometimes you have to just avoid the triggers for a time to get some relief. If you know that long pet hair is a trigger, keep your pet’s hair cut short and close to the skin. Avoid fresh cut grass, as that can also wreak havoc on the sinuses. If pollen is a trigger, stay indoors on days the pollen count is elevated. It might be a little inconvenient, but if you can avoid the allergens during their peak times, it can make things a little more bearable.
