How to Make Your Own Toothpaste

Prepping is all about trying to cover your bases and make sure that you have thought of every item that you could ever need. It seems like a daunting job and the truth is that this is a hard job. Prepping requires skill and it requires time and it requires patience. However if you are able to master these areas you too can learn to be one of the best prepared preppers in the area. We have been taking the time to try and learn all we can about self-reliance and making the items we need. Not only does this lead to a better understanding of what you need and how you can get it, but it also leads to a knowledge base that can never be taken away from you. Once you have learned how to do a particular task you should always be able to handle that task.

One such task that we have started toying with is making our own toothpaste. While this might seem like a juvenile thing to attempt, the truth is that toothpaste is an item we need. Not only does it help with the bad breath but it also helps keep your mouth clean and it fights off bacteria and other harmful items that could try and take you down. Having clean teeth is serious business. Did you know that bad mouth hygiene could lead to serious heart issues? Many heart patients are forced to have regular dentist appointments and they are also required to take antibiotics before the visit to help ensure that nothing bad happens with the heart. It is that serious.

One simple recipe that we love is about as easy as it could be. This recipe is based on a single use measurement but you could easily make more than this and you would have enough for the whole family. if you have ingredients like baking soda, fine salt, essential oil, and water, then you can make this.

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt
  • 2-3 drops of peppermint oil (other citrus would work)
  • Few drops of water

Mix this into a paste and you can use it immediately. It will have the flavor of the oil that you place in the mixture. We use peppermint because it is the most commonly used flavored and it has a nice minty bite that we all like.

Another option is for those that are looking to use items like coconut oil and peroxide.

  • 6 tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ tsp. hydrogen peroxide
  • 2 TBSP. coconut oil (liquefied)
  • 10 drops peppermint oil or clove oil, or any citrus-based oil

If this mixture is not sweet enough you can always add something like Stevia or Splenda.

These mixtures can be played with and you can find a combination that works for you. In the long run this will not only save you some money but it could also be a great bargaining chip if the times got really rough. It is always good to have a skill that other people do not have. It will help ensure your longevity and your families survival.

Have you ever tried making your own toothpaste? Which recipe do you like best?
