How To Make A Master Tonic to Boost Your Immune System

We all know that there are plenty of immune boosting natural products out there, some of then growing in our own gardens and backyards. Did you know that you can combine these ingredients into a “master tonic” that is nutrient and antioxidant rich, and full of immune strengthening properties? You can, and it’s easier than you might think! A master tonic can be your health’s greatest ally during cold and flu season, and year round for overall health. Master tonics have been made for generations and most of them are variations of the same basic recipe. Your grandparents or great grandparents probably had a master tonic they grew up drinking that their parents had passed down to them. Here is a quick guide to help you mix up your own immunity boosting brew.

What Goes in a Master Tonic?

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, which is a cleansing agent, and helps with circulation is the first ingredient you need. It also helps with stiff joints, promotes liver and gallbladder health, and can prevent headaches.

Spicy Peppers

Hot peppers are full of antioxidants, help fight colds and flu, cleanse the system, and clear congestion.


Garlic boosts metabolism, gets rid of toxins in the body, helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol, and is anti-bacterial.


Turmeric helps the digestive system, and supports the pancreas and spleen. It also helps with fighting off colds.


The onion has many powerful properties to boost your health. It is an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory, and aids in healthy hair and skin.


Ginger is known for being your digestive system’s best friend. It fights nausea and upset stomach, and supports the nervous system.


Horseradish is not just a dipping sauce! It helps the lungs and colon, and is full of potassium, as well as being a good source of iron.

Making the Tonic

First, you need to combine the garlic, onion, horseradish, ginger, and peppers in a food processor and chop them. Make sure to use equal amounts of each, and add in some chopped turmeric (not as much as the other ingredients). Add them to a large glass jar, and then cover them with the apple cider vinegar. Put a lid on the jar and keep it in a dark spot. You need to shake the contents daily.

After a couple of weeks, you will have formed a liquid. Pour off and strain out as much of it as you can. This is your “master tonic.” The solid parts can be thrown out, or they can be dried and ground up to use as seasoning.

For maximum benefit, drink a shot glass full each day. You can sweeten it with some raw local honey if you like, which also has many health benefits.
