If you are in survival mode, you’re going to have to eat. Usually when one is in this type of situation, you may not have electricity at your disposal, and if you do, you may not have much. A good skill to add to your prepping arsenal is to know how to prepare a hot meal with out electricity. Here are 9 ways you can cook a hot meal when you have no power.
Use A Gas Grill
This is a given. Using a gas grill doesn’t require electricity, just propane to run the grill. You can cook all kinds of things on the grill, from meat to veggies in foil packets, to s’mores for a treat! Always use the gas grill outside, for obvious safety reasons.
Build a Fire
Our ancestors cooked without electricity for years. They often cooked over an open fire, and ate pretty well! With the right equipment like a cooking pot, some aluminum foil, and a few other utensils, you can cook a lot of foods right over the fire!
Cook Stove with Canned Fuel
Cooking with canned fuel is a favorite for many campers and hikers, as well as preppers. It allows you to cook a variety of foods without having to build a fire. You can buy canned fuel at big box retailers like Wal-Mart, and from many online retailers as well.
Wood Cook Stove
Ma Ingalls loved her wood cook stove, and many modern homemakers love theirs as well. Cooking on a wood stove does take some practice, so you may want to try your hand at it ahead of time, BEFORE you are dependent on it for all your cooking and baking.
Use a Charcoal Grill
Again, this is another easy (and outdoor only) solution for cooking. All you need is the grill, some charcoal, and a lighter. You can cook lots of things on a charcoal grill just like you would on a gas grill.
Try Meals that Cook Themselves
You can purchase ready to eat meals that are packaged with a heating element inside. You just twist or shake the meal package to activate it, and it cooks for you. It’s not gourmet, but it will work. Some military MRE’s now have this as a feature. You can purchase these online or at some outdoor/camping stores.
Have you heard of the combination stove? It is a cook stove than can use wood, charcoal, or even propane, just whatever you have available. They are light, and easy to use. This would be a good option if you didn’t have a large grill or wood stove, because you could purchase the fuel needed, and use them in this device. A popular brand is Volcano.
Propane Deep Fryer
This option puts off a LOT of heat, and is used for everything from deep frying to making large pots of soup. It can even be used for heating up water to can, and to do laundry (or bathe!). A deep fryer like this should always be used outside.
Solar Ovens are growing in popularity. They are easy to make if you want a DIY version, or you can purchase one online. Solar ovens take longer to cook food, but will get the job done! You can use them for everything from baking bread to cooking a pizza.
As you can see, you do have several options for cooking if you find yourself in a situation without electricity for a time. You will still be able to provide hot, healthy meals for your family! What is your favorite off grid cooking solution?
