A gluten free diet is not just a trend. It’s a health necessity for many Americans, including myself! I have been on this gluten free journey for nearly a year now and it has completely transformed my health. As a prepper, going gluten free has required me to make some major changes to my overall food storage plan. Many of the foods that preppers rely on are crammed full of wheat and gluten… baking mixes, oats, and even old fashioned southern grits are all places where gluten can hide. So how can a prepper plan to stay gluten free after a major SHTF event? It all boils down to having the right supplies on hand. Today, I want to share some of my favorite gluten free finds for prepper food storage.
Baking mixes are a major staple for all American households, but especially for prepping families. You can still keep bread mixes on hand without sacrificing your health when you buy this amazing gluten free French bread mix from Augason Farms. It comes in a large #10 size can with a ten-year shelf life. I’ve used this mix to make ordinary French bread, dinner rolls, and even delicious breadsticks. All you have to do is add water, apple cider vinegar, and yeast so it’s really easy to whip up. You even get recipes on the label!
Pancake mixes are a must-have for prepping. It doesn’t get much easier than whipping up a batch of pancakes, even if you are cooking over an open flame. When you get started in gluten free baking, it takes some time to adjust. One of the biggest necessities will be xanthan gum. It transforms your homemade baking mixes from cardboard to edible.
