Food is the fuel we place in our bodies. If you have ever been in a car that had bad fuel, then you understand how poorly it can operate. The same can be said for your body. If we are not placing the right fuels in our bodies then we cannot expect them to work well. There is a reason that the dieting industry is a billion dollar business. People realize we eat too much food and we eat too much unhealthy food. The days of eating a diet rich in seeds and plants are long gone. Instead we are all about the carbs and the processed foods in today’s society.
I have to admit that my family is not completely exempt here. I do my best to provide healthy home grown foods for my family to enjoy, but we don’t always succeed. There are occasional nights where we resort to pizza or fast food, but as a rule, we try to avoid junk foods and leave them for occasional treats. As preppers, we recognize that keeping our bodies healthy has to be a top priority.
There are some foods that are just terrible for your health and you cannot justify them at all. Overall, there are handful of foods that present the most dangerous threat. So even if you sneak the occasional bowl of ice cream, make sure you are avoiding these 10 foods at all times.
Farm Raised Salmon
Salmon is a delicious protein and it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and many other helpful vitamins and nutrients. However, the farm raised variety do not offer the same benefits as salmon caught in the wild. The farm-raised salmon have been fed dangerous amounts of antibiotics and vitamins. They are pumped full of steroids to help them grow bigger faster. While farmed salmon are fatter than wild salmon, they contain 50% less Omega 3’s. If you still aren’t convinced, consider the fact that farm raised salmon has actually been outlawed in Australia, New Zealand, and even in Russia.
Genetically Engineered Papaya
Papaya was devastated by a ring spot disease in the late 90’s. Because of this, scientists turned to genetics to keep production going. They have since made a fruit that is not going to be harmed by that virus. However the damage it can do to you and I is serious. It has been linked to severe intestinal issues as well as other digestive issues. It has actually been banned by the European Union, but here in America, you can still find it pretty routinely so beware!
Ractopamine Tainted Meat
Ractopamine is a drug that many farm animals are given. It was said to be a great treatment for asthma but it has other effects as well. It has been found to reduce the fat content of animals and thus increase the muscle mass. This makes it a great drug for farms that sale their meat by the pound. Almost 20% of this drug remains in the meat even after you cook it. It has been linked to reduced fertility in both men and women as well as a variety of other issues. It has been banned in China, Russia, and Taiwan.
Brominated Vegetable Oil
This oil is typically used in a variety of soft drinks and sports drinks. It was originally created in chemical labs as a fame retardant. However the FDA approved this substance for use in 1978. Known problems include cardio-arrhythmias, hyper activity, organ failure, rashes, cancer, acne, birth defects, and the list goes on. It has been banned totally in Europe in Japan.
Artificial Colors and Flavors
Processed foods are crammed full of artificial flavors and colors. From Jell-O to your favorite snack crackers, these items have a long shelf life because they are largely bioengineered. Artificial colors and flavorings have been linked to birth defects, growth defects, cancer, and organ failure. They have been banned in Norway and Austria.
Arsenic Laced Chicken
Believe it or not, many common types of chicken feed contain arsenic-based drugs. The United States approved this measure because it makes the chickens grow faster, fatter, and it makes their meat pinker. However the European Union has banned this practice because it has been linked to many cases of low I.Q., heart problems, asthma, still birth, infertility, diabetes, and miscarriage.
This ingredient is usually found in bread products. It is said to increase the elasticity of the bread and to help it stand up to the dough hooks a bit better. However the real problem with this ingredient is the fact that it causes kidney damage, nervous system damage, gastrointestinal discomfort, and it has also been linked to cancer.
Made by Proctor and Gamble, this product is a substitute for fat. It is used in “fat free” snacks. It was approved for use in 1998, but it is actually quite dangerous. Rats fed chips with Olean gained weight. Surprised? It also leads to oily anal leakage, diarrhea, cramps, and leaky bowels. It is banned in the UK and in Canada.
BHA and BHT
This is a preservative that is used in chewing gum, beer, meat, butter, potatoes, nuts, and many other products. It’s used quite frequently, but you might be surprised to learn that it caused cancer in lab rats. It has even been linked to cancer in humans. Because of the health risk, it was banned in Japan and the European Union.
Milk And Dairy With rBGH
This is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring bovine hormone. It was created by Monsanto from E. Coli bacteria. They market it as Posilac. This is a growth hormone that 1 in 6 cows are injected with regularly. It increases the size and rate of growth. Exposure to this chemical leads to colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. So far, it has been banned in Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Canada, and the European Union.
As you can see, there are a lot of foods available to us here in the United States that are already banned in many other parts of the world. These foods are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
